Install KidRoles on a computer

KidRoles: Shop is a web app (PWA). You install it straight from the browser — no installer to download, no account and free of charge. Once installed it has its own window and icon, and after the first launch it works without internet.

Chrome and Edge — Windows, macOS and Linux

The easiest way: open KidRoles and click “Install” in the bar at the bottom of the screen, or “Install the app” in the app’s sidebar. If you don’t see them, install from the browser:

  1. Open shop.kidroles.com in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
  2. Click the install icon at the right end of the address bar (labelled “App available” in Edge) and confirm with Install.
  3. No icon? In Chrome, open the ⋮ menu, then “Cast, save, and share” → “Install page as app…”. In Edge: the … menu → “Apps” → “Install this site as an app”.
  4. KidRoles opens in its own window, without the address bar and tabs. You’ll find the icon in the Start menu (Windows), in Launchpad and Spotlight (macOS) or in the app menu (Linux).

Menu item names can differ slightly between browser versions. Firefox doesn’t install web apps the way Chrome and Edge do (on Windows, from version 143, it can only pin a tab to the taskbar) — KidRoles works there in a normal tab, offline too.

Safari on a Mac — “Add to Dock” (macOS 14 or later)

  1. Open shop.kidroles.com in Safari.
  2. Choose File → Add to Dock from the menu (or the Share button → “Add to Dock”).
  3. Keep the name and click Add. KidRoles appears in the Dock and in the Applications folder in your home folder; you can also open it from Launchpad and Spotlight.

Important: the Dock app has its own data — Safari copies only cookies to it, not the tab’s app data (cashiers, products, history). Set up cashiers and products in the Dock app itself. A catalog you prepared earlier in a Safari tab moves over as a file: “Save catalog” in edit mode, then “Load catalog” in the Dock app.

Older macOS? Install KidRoles from Chrome or Edge — the steps above work on a Mac too.

What works without internet

On the first launch (online) the browser saves the app. After that, this works without internet:

  • the till, cart, payment, giving change and the coin tray,
  • “Customer” mode, coins and cashier levels,
  • the product catalog, cashiers, history and settings,
  • scanning barcodes with this computer’s camera (if it has one).

You need internet to pair a phone as a scanner (it connects through our pairing server), to send feedback and to get a new version. Updates arrive on their own: when the computer is online, the app loads the latest version when it opens.

Where the data lives

Everything — cashiers (including their photos), products, history, coins and settings — stays in the browser on that computer, in the profile of the user who installed the app. There are no accounts and nothing reaches our server.

  • Chrome and Edge: the installed app and a shop.kidroles.com tab in the same browser profile share the same data. A different browser profile or another account on the computer is a separate, empty shop.
  • Safari: the Dock app has its own data, separate from Safari tabs.
  • One window at a time: two open windows are two independent states and one save overwrites the other — the app warns you when it spots a second window.
  • The data is gone if you clear this site’s cookies and site data in the browser, or tick “delete data” when uninstalling.

Backing up products: in catalog edit mode, “Save catalog” writes them to a file and “Load catalog” loads it on this or another computer. Cashiers, coins and history stay in the browser.

How to uninstall

  • Chrome: in the KidRoles window open the ⋮ menu and choose to uninstall the app. Tick “Also delete data from Chrome” only if you want to wipe the shop. The address chrome://apps also lists installed apps.
  • Edge: go to edge://apps and uninstall KidRoles from the menu on its tile. On Windows the app is also under Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  • Safari (macOS): drag KidRoles from the Applications folder in your home folder to the Trash.

In Chrome and Edge, uninstalling without deleting the data leaves the shop in the browser — reinstall and everything is back.
