Grocery store math — exercises you do at the shelf
A grocery store is the one place where a child does math voluntarily. All it takes is asking questions instead of supplying answers.
An ordinary grocery run is a ready-made set of exercises: the numbers are real, the answer matters, and the feedback arrives immediately. No worksheet reproduces that.
This piece is not about counting money — that is covered separately in teaching kids to make change. This is about the math that happens away from the register: at the shelf, at the scale, comparing two packages.
The rule that decides everything
Do not supply the answer. Ask the question and sit through the silence.
An adult answers in about two seconds — a child needs fifteen. Those fifteen seconds are the exercise; fill them with a hint and it is gone.
Second rule: one question per trip. A store turned into a lesson stops working by the third visit, because your child starts avoiding it.
Eight exercises, easiest first
1. How many (age 6). “We need six eggs. Take them out of the dozen carton.” Counting while moving, with built-in checking — a missing egg is visible.
2. Which is heavier (age 6). Two boxes of pasta, one in each hand: “Which do you think is heavier?” then check on the scale. Your child learns the difference between seems and is — the foundation of estimating.
3. How much more (ages 6–7). Two products, $4 and $6: “How much more is this one?” Subtraction on small round numbers, in a situation where the answer is good for something.
4. What do three cost (age 7). “Yogurt is $3. We are taking three. How much is that?” Multiplication before it shows up at school — as repeated addition, without calling it multiplication.
5. Guess the cart total (ages 7–8). In the checkout line: “Roughly how much will this come to?” The answer is not supposed to be exact — it is supposed to be close. Estimating is the most practical piece of math in adult life and almost nobody practises it.
6. Which is the better deal (ages 7–8). Two sizes of the same thing: a 16 oz box for $2.49 and a 32 oz box for $5.49. “Which one is the better buy?” If your child gets stuck, point at the small shelf tag with the unit price — the store did the arithmetic for us.
7. Is it enough (ages 7–8). “You have $20. You want this and this. Is that enough?” Adding with a purpose, which is exactly what an adult does at the shelf.
8. Weight and price (age 8). Loose produce: “A pound costs $1.80. We are weighing half a pound. What do we pay?” Fractions in the most natural form there is.
Unit price — the one exercise worth the other seven
The small tag showing price per pound or per ounce is on every shelf in every American supermarket, and almost nobody points it out to a child. It is the one place in the store where you can see directly that a bigger package does not always mean cheaper.
The exercise takes twenty seconds: two packages, two tags, one question — “which number is smaller?” For a seven-year-old that is comparing numbers. For a ten-year-old it is their first deliberate consumer decision.
The point of this exercise is not for your child to convert $2.49 for 16 ounces into $2.49 per pound — the store already did that work and printed it. The point is the habit of looking at the second number, the small one, and comparing that instead of the figure on the front of the box.
The habit cuts both ways: sometimes the larger package wins, sometimes the smaller one, and you cannot predict which from the size. It is the one situation in a store where a child gets to catch the adult world out on a first impression being wrong — and that is exactly why this exercise sticks harder than the other seven put together.
What to avoid
Quizzing. “So what is seven plus five?” in the middle of shopping turns the store into a test. The question has to be about what you are actually buying.
Rushing. Shopping in a hurry and math exercises are mutually exclusive. If you have ten minutes, that is a grocery run — not a lesson.
Correcting halfway. Your child counts out loud and slips on the third step. Wait until the end; interrupted counting has to start over, and that discourages more effectively than a wrong answer.
Rewarding a right answer. The natural reward is that the total works out. Adding a candy bar on top turns thinking into a transaction.
The home version, when the store is not an option
Some parents have no way to practise at the shelf: the groceries arrive by delivery, or the child simply does not want to come. The same math works on a store you build at home — with real packaging out of the cupboard and hand-written price tags.

How to tell it is working
Not by your child counting faster. By your child starting to ask on their own: “how much is that altogether?”, “which one is cheaper?” That means numbers have stopped being schoolwork and become a way of finding something out.
That is the moment to go further — to a first solo shopping trip, where your child runs the whole transaction without you.
